WDMESC: Tiles & Trade: An Econ Mahjong Workshop

This interactive workshop uses the game of mahjong as a playful yet powerful lens to explore core economic ideas. Whether you’re new to the game or looking to build your skills, you’ll learn how to play through hands-on practice and guided instruction. Through hands-on play and guided discussion, participants will see how every tile decision reflects concepts like scarcity, opportunity cost, risk management, and strategic thinking. Just as players must adapt to incomplete information and shifting conditions at the table, individuals and businesses navigate uncertainty in real-world markets. Beyond game strategy, the workshop connects these lessons to the broader economy-how we allocate resources, respond to incentives, and make trade-offs over time. A special focus is place on investing in human capital: the skills, knowledge, and experiences that increase ones' value and opportunities. This session will be held at The Shoppes at Bowman, 301 S. Bowman Rd, Suite 100, Little Rock, AR 72211.

Important Session Information:

Upon successful completion, Arkansas educators under contract for the 2026-2027 school year will receive 3 hours professional development credit, ready to use resources and light snacks. They will also receive an Official National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) 2026 Large Size Card (valued at $15). This session will be held offsite at The Shoppes at Bowman, 301 S. Bowman Rd, Suite 100 Little Rock, AR. 72211.

Children will not be allowed in professional development sessions facilitated at the Wilbur D. Mills Education Service Cooperative or in the building where the sessions are located. Attendees with children will be asked to leave.
