Strategies for Teaching Beginning Phonics Skills

This course is for all teachers who teach beginning phonics skills or who work with struggling decoders who need beginning phonics skill interventions.  During this course, you will learn multisensory strategies and routines to help your students learn the sound-symbol relationship, and become proficient at decoding CVC words, single syllable words with short vowels that contain blends and digraphs, CVCe words, as well as teaching vowel teams and vowel-r.  We will also learn how to effectively teach multisyllabic words with closed, open, and VCe syllables.  By the end of the course, you will have a strong understanding of the phonics continuum of skills and be able to teach your students to decode and encode words with these early phonics skills so they can become automatic decoders.  You will leave feeling confident in your phonics knowledge and will feel more secure in your understanding of how the core program or intervention programs your school may already be using teaches these early phonics skills.
