Teaching Mathematics for Understanding
Salina 22-23

Mathematics is a foundational subject. Good mathematics instruction forms a solid foundation, beginning with conceptual understanding and building to procedural fluency (NCTM, 2014). Yet many educators teach shortcuts and tricks that inadvertently create an unstable mathematics foundation. What are the shortcuts and tricks impeding our students' learning? In this workshop, K-12 teachers will learn the pitfalls of common mathematics shortcuts and tricks while also learning alternate approaches that promote mathematical understanding. Let's nix the tricks in our mathematics classrooms!
