Session Detail

Mean Girls

Sugar and spice and everything nice.  That’s what little girls are made of.  (Mother Goose nursery rhyme)

Not anymore, it is Queen Bees, Wannabes, Mean Chicks, Cliques, Dirty Tricks, and Girl Wars.  Dory age 16 said, “To ask a girl if she’s ever been treated mean by another girl is to ask if she’s ever been around her peers.”  Girls grow up being taught that it is prettier to be nice and because of this when they become angry they resort to covert forms of aggression – Relational Aggression.  We are just now understanding the magnitude and effects of Relational Aggression, in fact, it has been reported that 70% of girls have been mistreated by their friends.  In this workshop, you will learn the types and levels of relational aggression; the short and long-term effects; school-wide and classroom strategies for managing RA; strategies to empower victims and bystanders; hints for handling RA parents; and most importantly how to overcome the culture that breeds RA.
