Session Detail

Building Automaticity and Fluency in Our Students' Oral Reading

Do you feel that your students are not making enough gains on their oral reading fluency screeners and progress monitoring?  This training will help you focus on teaching specific strategies you can implement with your whole class or during intervention times with a small group of students to improve automaticity at the word-level as well as oral reading fluency of decodable and grade-level text.  Systematic word-level instruction is vital for students who cannot read grade-level text and have decoding challenges, but the word-level instruction will be fruitless if automaticity and fluency are not part of the instruction you are providing for your students.  Fluency instruction is essential for students with significant decoding challenges since reading word by word causes students to focus their attention on decoding and not understanding what they are reading. During this training, you will learn research-based strategies that will improve your student’s automaticity at the word-level and will over time improve their oral reading fluency.  This training will be beneficial for any classroom teacher at any grade level, SPED teachers, or reading interventionists.  You will walk away with more instructional strategies and interventions you can begin implementing with your students who are not reading at the benchmark level on your oral reading fluency screener.
