While teaching students to become automatic with basic math facts takes more time in the beginning, in the long run the benefits to students are far more than strictly teaching memorization. When students learn and understand strategies they are more likely to retain the automaticity. Furthermore, since these strategies are generalizable to whole numbers, fractions, decimals, integers, and variable expressions they will support mathematical fluency well beyond elementary school.
During this session participants will gain:
- Essential basic fact strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Significant reasoning strategies beyond basic facts for whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
- Games to develop reasoning and thinking skills in students
- Routines to aid in developing fluency in the basic facts
Walk away with the ability to empower your students with a set of reasoning strategies that will help them develop fluency across K-8 mathematics standards.
