One of the most under-served student populations in the United States are the twice-exceptional. These students present a unique challenge to educators, counselors, and school administrators alike. As students with co-existing exceptionalities (both intellectually gifted and learning disabled), twice-exceptional students can perform at an average or above average level but fail to achieve to their full potential due to one or more debilitating disabilities such as ADHD, Aspergers, Dyslexia etc. Due to their advanced intellectual capacity (usually accompanied by lower social/emotional development) and the ability to 'mask' their disabilities, many twice-exceptional students are never identified as needing support due to average test scores. This masked potential can leave students, parents, and staff extremely frustrated leading to potential conflicts both in and out of the classroom. As the numbers of twice-exceptional students continue to increase it is imperative that our schools are empowered to both identify, understand, and effectively educate this vulnerable population. This workshop is specifically designed to train school staff to do just that: empower teachers, counselors, and administrators to effectively engage, support, and teach their twice-exceptional students.
