Assessment and Treatment of Selective Mutism

- Speech-Language Pathologists, Psychologists. Occupational Therapists, Guidance Counselors and Teachers Who Support Students with Selective Mutism

  • List the five criteria used in the DSM-5 for a diagnosis of selective mutism.
  • Identify three co-morbid disorders commonly associated with selective mutism.
  • Evaluate three methodologies commonly used in the treatment of selective mutism.
  • Articulate an effective multi-disciplinary team approach to treating selective mutism for the therapist, educators, and mental health professionals.
  • Explain why a Section 504 Plan or an IEP is more appropriate for an individual with selective mutism.
  • Utilize an IEP communication goal and objectives for a child diagnosed with selective mutism.

Important Session Information:

Once thought of as a rare childhood anxiety disorder, selective mutism’s prevalence has been estimated to be more common than autism. Because selective mutism impacts not only a child’s social emotional development, but also his/her communication and sensory processing skills, it warrants the attention of mental health treating practitioners, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and educators. It is important to have a multi-disciplinary team approach to promote progress in a child with selective mutism across all settings.

THIS COURSE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO A LIVE VIA VIDEO/WEB-BASED FORMAT. REGISTRANTS WILL BE SENT AN EMAIL WITH THE ZOOM LINK FOR PARTICIPATING.

This interactive one-day course will thoroughly discuss the assessment and treatment process for a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to working with children with selective mutism as indicated in current literature and evidence-based practice. Participants will learn the effective role of both therapists and educators to build upon the mental health professional’s perspective. Participants will be able to confidently diagnose selective mutism, within their scope of practice, and learn the most effective plan of care across settings. Through the use of video-based case studies and interactive discussion, participants will be able to implement their new interventions immediately upon returning to work
