Looking at Development and Behavior Through the Lens of Embodied Cognition

- Audience: PT/OT/PTA/OTA

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the connection between sensorimotor needs and behaviors.
  • Evaluate how behavior and/or sensorimotor needs affect participation and success in the school setting.
  • Create effective and individualized intervention based on a student’s sensorimotor needs to meet their learning goals.
  • Determine the sensorimotor needs that may be exhibited as behaviors in students.
  • Evaluate how behavior and/or sensorimotor needs affect self regulation and functional skills in the school setting.
  • Plan interventions based on the recognition of possible sensorimotor needs influencing behavioral responses.

Important Session Information:

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of embodied cognition and its practical implications for understanding and supporting children’s behaviors. Participants will examine how cognitive processes are shaped by sensorimotor development, reflexes, social interaction, communication, and self-regulation, and how these foundations influence the behaviors we see in practice.

Building on this framework, the course addresses the complex challenges faced by children impacted by disabilities, trauma, toxic stress, and environmental factors, with discussion of behaviors such as self-stimulation, restricted and repetitive actions, anxiety responses, and self-injurious behaviors. Through case studies, participants will learn to identify underlying sensorimotor needs and connect them to targeted interventions across populations including ASD, VI, MI, MD, and DHH.

Finally, the course emphasizes a holistic, whole-child perspective, guiding attendees in using the Sensorimotor Needs Inventory© to interpret behaviors, categorize underlying needs, and develop individualized, developmentally supportive intervention plans.

Completion of this 90-minute live training also qualifies participants to purchase the web-based Sensorimotor Needs Inventory© for individual use.
