Practical Approach to Functional Behavior Assessment & Intervention Development

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), a systematic, evidence-based process for assessing behavior and the context in which it occurs, has been established as a proactive approach that can be used at the first signs of misbehavior.  A primary goal of FBA is to guide the development of effective, positive interventions based on the function (purpose) of the behavior.  Despite best practice research and law requiring the use of function-based assessment and implementation of behavioral interventions in the schools, implementation remains a challenge. The logic for the Practical FBA training is that students who exhibit consistent minor problem behaviors (approximately 10-15% of studetn population benefit from basic FBA procedures that may be conducted by a variety of school professionals.

This workshop will utilize a variety of teaching methods including lecture, discussion, video modeling, and practicing skills.  Participants will learn the foundatios for understanding behavior and the context in which it occurs, strategies for investigating problem behaviors (including an overview of the FACTS interview for Staff and Students), practical mechanisms for observing and summarizing behavior, as well as an overview of function-based behavioral support linked to FBA results.  This two-day workshop will include content on:

   Day One
  • Basic Behavior Principles**
  • FBA: Conducting Interviews

  • Linking FBA to BSP Introduction

   Day Two
