School Threat Assessment Workshop
Guidelines for Responding to Student Threats of Violence

School threat assessment is recognized as a best practice for preventing school shootings and is included as a recommendation as part of Governor Abbott's school safety plan for Texas. This 1 day workshop on school threat assessment will present a step-by-step process for addressing threatening and other potentially dangerous behavior in school or that could impact a school.

It will also teach participants how to respond to threatening behavior and other disturbing behavior, gather additional information, make an assessment, and take preventive steps if necessary. The workshop is appropriate for school personnel, school security professionals, law enforcement professionals, mental health professionals, and others who may be tasked with addressing threatening behavior in school.

Topics covered during this workshop include:

•Understanding School Violence and Implications for Prevention

•What is School Threat Assessment?

•Steps in the Threat Assessment Process

•Developing and Implementing Case Management Plans

•Steps to Develop a School Threat Assessment Program

•Other Things We Can Do

•Summary/Q&A

Important Session Information:

This one-day workshop covers the rationale and need for threat assessment as a school-based prevention strategy, the Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines (VSTAG) model of student threat assessment, and how this model can be applied to a wide range of cases and legal situations. This workshop runs 6.5 hours and will be presented by Dr. Dewey Cornell of the University of Virginia who was the primary developer of the Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines (VSTAG).

The workshop is intended for school-based multidisciplinary teams and school system administration. A team typically includes a school administrator, school resource officer or other law enforcement representative, and one or more school mental health professionals (such as counselors, psychologists, and social workers). Some teams also include nurses, teachers, and other school personnel. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants are prepared to begin doing threat assessments.
