Our schools have demographics that are ever-changing and in many school settings, we share the same students with Mexico. The enrollment and appropriate placement of Mexican immigrant students is critical to their academic success. This session provides a comparison of the educational systems of Mexico and the United States. Different types of Primarias, Secundarias, and Preparatorias will be discussed, as well as the various types of schools in Mexico (i.e., CONAFE, indigenous, migrant, special, etc.). The benefits of the Binational Migrant Education Program will be addressed. This session will also address the following questions: How do I request students’ school records from Mexico? How do I read and interpret students’ school records from Mexico? How do I award credit from a Mexican report card or transcript?
Participants will be given tools for obtaining, interpreting, and utilizing records from Mexico and will review copies of records to gain an understanding of how to use these documents. Participants will receive various resources that will help them meet the needs of their Mexican immigrant student population. Participants are also invited to bring any records they need assistance in interpreting.
