Administration, Scoring, and Interpretation of the WJ IV Tests of Achievement and Tests of Oral Language

Participants will gain the skills necessary to administer, score, and interpret the Woodcock Johnson Fourth Edition (WJ IV) Tests of Achievement and Tests of Oral Language. This session is designed to address the WJ IV Tests of Achievement and Tests of Oral Language features of a carefully constructed organizational plan, new tests and clusters, an updated theoretical model, and customized interpretive analyses.

  • Tests of Achievement: The emphasis of this part of the session will be on the completely new configuration and how the new tests and clusters support a broad range of diagnostic assessment needs for a wide variety of evaluation professionals. During the session, participants will be introduced to a procedure for determining relative strengths and weaknesses within tests and clusters from three core areas of achievement.
  • Tests of Oral Language: The focus of this part of the session will be on the dedicated set of oral language and language-related measures that comprise an important diagnostic supplement to the WJ IV COG and WJ IV ACH. Participants will understand the use of the battery as stand-alone tests that are useful for oral language assessment, determination of English (and Spanish) language proficiency, and for comparison of strengths and weaknesses among oral language and language related abilities for a more complete reading, writing, or dyslexia evaluation.

PLEASE NOTE: This session is designed for educational evaluation professionals who are currently working in a district or charter school, including those who evaluate/assess for dyslexia.

Important Session Information:

Please note that test kits will not be provided for the training. You are encouraged to bring your own test kits to the session.

It is highly recommended that participants have knowledge, background, and experience with test administration and assessment of achievement.

Specifically, the WJ-IV has Examiner Qualifications (as detailed in the WJ-IV Administration Manual, p. 8 in Tests of Oral Language and p. 10 in Tests of Achievement & Cognitive Abilities): “Examiner qualifications have been informed by the joint Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (Standard 11.3, 13.10, and 13.13), American Psychological Association, and National Council on Measurement in Education.”

WJ IV Tests of Oral Language: “Competent interpretation of the WJ IV OL requires a higher degree of knowledge and experience than is required for administering and scoring the tests. Graduate-level training in standardized assessments and a background in diagnostic decision-making are requisite. The level of formal education necessary to interpret the WJ IV OL is typically documented by successful completion of an applicable graduate-level program of study that includes, at a minimum, a practicum-type course covering administration and interpretation of standardized test of language or achievement. In addition, many qualified examiners possess state, provincial, or professional certification, registration, or licensure in a field or profession that includes, as part of its formal training and code of ethics, the responsibility for rendering assessment and interpretation services.”

WJ IV Tests of Achievement: “Competent interpretation of the WJ IV ACH requires a higher degree of knowledge and experience than is required for administering and scoring the tests. Graduate-level training in standardized assessments and a background in diagnostic decision-making are requisite. The level of formal education necessary to interpret the WJ IV ACH is typically documented by successful completion of an applicable graduate-level program of study that includes, at a minimum, a practicum-type course covering administration and interpretation of standardized test of academic achievement.
