Assessing What Learners Can Do: Focusing on Proficiency to Design Effective Assessments
Share
What can learners do at each proficiency level (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced) and what does it take to move to the next level? How do you know what learners can do with what they have learned? Experience and analyze tasks to develop and assess learners as they interact in conversations; demonstrate understanding of what they hear, read, or view; and create messages in the World Language classroom. Learn to design a performance task that demonstrates learners’ independent use of language at the targeted proficiency level; break it down into the language functions needed for success on the task; and create assessments to evaluate learners’ language performance daily (formative) and at the unit’s or program’s end (summative). Experience how to gather evidence of performance frequently, so both learners and educators can reflect on progress to reach higher levels of proficiency.
Outcomes:
As a result of this workshop, I can:
• identify the differences between formative and summative assessments and when to use each type of assessment
• describe how to move from teacher-controlled tasks to learners’ independent practice of language
• design effective assessment tasks for learners to show what they can do with the language in each mode of communication
• deconstruct summative assessments into specific elements to practice so learners move to more “independent” use of language
