National Presenter Series for Inclusive Practices
Neurodiversity in the Classroom: Strength-Based Strategies to Help Students with Special Needs Achieve Success in School and Life with Dr. Thomas Armstrong

The National Presenter Series for Inclusive Practices offers participants a unique opportunity to hear some of the leading national experts in education for diverse learners.  Participants will receive information on innovative strategies to support accessibility and proficiency for all learners inclusive of students with disabilities. The trainings support the Texas Teacher Standards and the Domains within the Texas Teacher Evaluation Support System (TTESS).  Join us for this unique and exciting opportunity.

Important Session Information:

Dr. Armstrong will introduce the idea of a diversity paradigm to replace or supplement the "disability" paradigm used to describe and help students with special needs in today's schools. He will present six basic principles of neurodiversity and seven primary components of positive niche construction (the creating of optimal learning environments for neurodiverse students) with a specific focus on five diversities: autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia/learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, intellectual disabilities, and emotional/behavioral disorders). Particular emphasis will be placed on presenting a wide range of positive niche construction interventions (including strength-based learning strategies, Universal Design for Learning methods, and positive environmental modifications) that teachers can use in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to design positive niches (optimal environments) for specific students in their classrooms and receive constructive feedback on making them even better.
