Session
Information:
Jonathan Mooney is an award-winning writer and entrepreneur
who did not learn to read until he was twelve years old. He is a
Harry S. Truman Scholar and author of Learning Outside The
Lines, which was written at 23, establishing Mooney as one of
the foremost leaders in the neurodiversity revolution.
Mooney faced a number of low expectations growing up—was
told he would flip burgers, be a high school dropout, and end up
in jail. Instead, he became a college graduate from Brown
University with an honors degree in English Literature, writes
books, the first of which he wrote as an undergrad, and has
become an advocate creating organizations and initiatives
that help others see the potential in living and learning differently.
"The Power of Inclusive Learning Environments"
Inclusive learning environment proponents believe that individuals don't have disabilities but experience disabilities. In this presentation, Mooney will discuss why that is and will also share a strength-based design approach that is meant to engage and empower individuals with cognitive and physical differences.
"Those Kids Who Can't Sit Still"
As one of "those kids" who couldn't sit still or keep quiet, Mooney spent much of his time hiding out in the bathroom with tears in his eyes to escape from reading out loud. Despite being told he would end up a drop out or incarcerated, he beat the odds and shares the actions that changed his life path, including the power of having a strong student-teacher connection.
"Non-Cognitive Skills and Why They're Critical"
Cognitive skills were once thought of as the primary drivers of success. New research challenges that notion by focusing on non-cognitive skill set that includes resiliency, perseverance, hope, and mindset.
