Bookmaking is an excellent way to inspire budding authors to practice reading and writing skills. We use mentor texts to teach oral language, vocabulary, and listening skills. Why not use these same books to teach students how to read and write... How to be authors! In this session, participants will review elements of emergent reading and writing appropriate for grades PK-1st. Ideas will be shared to help teachers and students publish their own books. Materials needed to participate in this session are:
8.5 x 11 copy paper, about 10 sheets
Legal size paper, 1-2 sheets
Card Stock 1-2 sheets in your choice of color(s)
stapler, hole punch, pencils, crayons, 1 rubber band, one large paper clip
Examples of books will be available and participants will create a few books of their own. What a thrill it will be to hear your students say "I am an author!" and know that they are taking pride in their work as readers and writers!
