LAMP is an augmentative alternative communication (AAC) approach designed to give individuals who are nonverbal a method of independently and spontaneously expressing themselves through a speech generating device. This course will cover the components of LAMP: readiness to learn, engaging the learner through joint engagement, and learning language through a unique and consistent motor plan paired with an auditory signal and natural consequence.
Day 1 will include discussions on how this approach addresses the core language deficits of autism, device features that are beneficial to teaching language, and how to use those features to implement LAMP components.
Day 2 will focus on how to further the communication partner's ability to implement the Language Acquisition through Motor Planning approach at different language stages and across environments. The language structure of the LAMP Words for Life language system and use of features to support language learning will be explored. This day will include hand-on time with the Prentke-Romich Devices.
This session will primarily focus on PRC communication devices, and LAMP Words for Life language system. Region 4 does not promote one system over another.
Session and materials costs are partially funded by state or federal grants.
This is an Introductory level course, and ASHA members will receive .5 CEU's per day (1.0 CEU's total).
