Science Speaker Series: Building the Story—Supporting Students Through Immersive Science Storylines

In today’s science classrooms, building coherent storylines is essential for helping students make sense of phenomena. This workshop, presented by Paul Andersen, will support teachers in developing formative assessments and mini-lessons that align with powerful science storylines. Teachers will create and refine 2-dimensional formative assessments that build student capacity in the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) and Recurring Themes and Concepts (RTCs) of the TEKS science standards. Next, they will backward-design simple mini-lessons that are improved through model teaching and collaboration. Paul will then guide participants through a science storyline anchored in phenomenon, modeling the use of driving question boards, summary tables, supporting phenomena, and mini-lessons to craft a coherent and connected story. Take your science teaching to the next level with this dynamic, hands-on learning experience — and leave with ready-to-use strategies you’ll refine alongside your colleagues.
