In today’s schools, staff are navigating increased student dysregulation, trauma responses, and emotional volatility. Traditional behavior management isn’t enough. What’s needed is a deeper shift: one that starts with adult emotional intelligence and regulation. Classrooms are emotional ecosystems—what adults bring into the room, students absorb. In classrooms where stress runs high and student emotions erupt unexpectedly, the adult response can either ignite the flame—or calm the storm. This powerful session explores the role of adult emotional intelligence and regulation in shaping safe, responsive school environments.
Participants will deepen their understanding of emotional intelligence by exploring brain-based regulation strategies, unpack the science of emotional contagion, learn how to regulate their own emotions when students are in crisis, and practice applying co-regulation skills in real-life school scenarios.
Designed for all school staff including: school leaders, counselors, behavior specialists, and classroom staff, this training provides practical tools to stay grounded and respond with intention—even in the most challenging moments and guides attendees to walk away with a customized calm plan, printable tools, and the confidence to lead with calm, compassion, and clarity.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define emotional intelligence (EQ) and explain its importance in school settings.
- Identify their own emotional triggers and common regulation patterns.
- Apply emotional regulation strategies to maintain composure during student escalations.
- Recognize the effects of emotional contagion and intentionally model calm, regulated behavior.
- Practice using EQ skills in role-play and real-world classroom scenarios.
- Develop a personal calm plan and emotional awareness checklist for use during stressful interactions.
- Strengthen student relationships by responding to behavior with empathy, boundaries, and emotional insight
