Leading a STEM Design Challenge in K-2: Making Music is Instrumental

Learn how to bring STEM to life in your second-grade classroom through an engaging, real-world design challenge! In this hands-on session, teachers will explore Music is Instrumental, a Region 4-designed engineering experience where students imagine, design, and build musical instruments using recycled materials. Participants will learn how to guide students through the Engineering Design Process while supporting cross-curricular connections. During this session, educators will experience the challenge as learners—exploring how to launch the activity, model thinking, and scaffold each step of the design process for early learners. Participants will explore integration strategies and discover ways to build STEM fluency through developmentally appropriate collaboration, communication, and creativity. This experience aligns with Science TEKS 2.8A and 2.8C, where students explain how sound is made and build a device that makes sound; Educators will leave with a JASON Learning digital license, facilitation tools, and practical strategies for successful classroom
