Managing with Maslow: Meeting Student Needs to Maximize Learning and Behavior
Classroom Management

Effective classroom management starts with understanding why students behave the way they do—and often, the answer lies in unmet needs. This session explores how Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs provides a powerful framework for proactive classroom management. Educators will learn how basic needs like safety, belonging, and esteem directly impact behavior and learning. The session will offer practical strategies for building a classroom environment where all students feel supported, valued, and ready to succeed. Through discussion, case studies, and reflection, participants will leave with tools to create a more compassionate, structured, and responsive learning environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and its relevance to classroom behavior

  • Recognize signs of unmet needs in students and how they manifest as behavioral challenges

  • Apply need-based strategies to support student engagement, regulation, and cooperation

  • Create a classroom management plan that addresses both behavioral expectations and student well-being
