DMI Building a System of Tens Day 4: Place Value Representation of Numbers Less Than One and Multiplying & Dividing with Decimals
Share
Many elementary teachers would rank place value and regrouping as among the most important mathematics topics they teach each year. At the middle school level, the topic of place value is revisited as students work to understand decimals. And many teachers would add that these topics - place value, regrouping, and decimals - are among the most troublesome. Day 4 examines the following questions: How do students employ their understanding of whole numbers, and how do their ideas about place value extend to places smaller than 1? What new concepts do they need in order to understand what decimals are and how they function? How do the whole-number algorithms apply to decimals? Why the rules for placing the decimal points work?
