The recent ushering of science education into the age of accountability brings pluses and minuses. Making sure that schools give all students a solid understanding of science is a difficult goal. Large-scale assessments are forcing many schools to look afresh at how they assess students. A positive outcome may be that school as well as teachers find better and alternative ways to use formative assessments to improve student learning.
