Research on Principles and Standards: Making Mathematics Reasonable in School
Share
NCTM's "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000)" makes a strong statement about the centrality of mathematical reasoning by including a major standard on reasoning and proof for all grades. Just as students need to learn to reason mathematically, so, too, must teachers develop and learn practices to support such learning. If students are to acquire the basic skills to build mathematical knowledge by reasoning, then teachers must have opportunities to develop the knowledge and practice necessary to make mathematics reasonable in school.
