DMI Making Meaning for Operations Day 2: When Dividing Doesn't Come Out Evenly

As students move from addition and subtraction to multiplication and division, the questions posed for addition and subtraction are extended for further examination. When we see different number sentences that can model a single situation, what do we learn about relationships among operations? Participants explore what it means to have a concept  of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by examining operations through different representations. The action of sharing provides a context in which children can learn about the meaning of division and it also allows them to sort out some of the complexities of dividing whole numbers. In this case, we visit the same class twice, as students explore what division may mean, and view students' thinking about a division problem in the context of whole numbers versus fractions. This exploration raises a set of fascinating questions, and participants will engage in discussion as they begin to entertain new understandings of whole-number division and make sense of dividing into 0 and dividing by 0.
