DMI Making Meaning for Operations Day 5: Highlights of Related Research
K-8
Share
This session reviews the ideas explored in the seminar, "Making Meaning for Operations," and identifies recent research findings that touch on the issues explored in the cases. Big ideas include: addition and subtraction problem types; situations modeled by multiplication and division; what is the connection between division and fractions, and what does it mean for a set of numbers to be closed under and operations; what is and what is not addition of fractions; representing the same story situation with two different expressions, dividing fractions, and contexts for multiplication and division.
Just as number is a central concept of mathematics study in the elementary grades, operation is a central concept of mathematics study across elementary, middle and high school - and beyond.
