Problem Structures K-5 Day 1: An Introduction to a Cognitively Guided Classroom

Whole number operations are a major focus of the elementary school math curriculum. By the end of fifth grade, students are expected to be able to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with multi-digit whole numbers. When teachers have deep understanding of the range of problem types and structures their students benefit during instruction. When teachers use a developed knowledge of problem structures they are better able to design and analyze tasks that will be offered during instruction, and are better able to respond to and support their students. This workshop series is based on the Cognitively Guided Instruction research. The basis of CGI is that children build an understanding of mathematics by solving a variety of problem types. The first day will focus on what is CGI and the problem types for whole number operations.
