Problem Structures K-5 Day 2: Strategies and Student Interviews

There are many different problem types that students encounter when solving problems in mathematics. Are teachers providing enough experiences for students with a variety of types or just one or two? The goals of the second day of this series include reviewing problem types, strategies, watching students at work, and learning how to conduct student interviews. Participants will review then practice identifying and ranking the various problem types and strategies for all operations. The next step is to observe and evaluate videos of students at work to determine the level of conceptual understanding. The final goal of day two is for teachers to learn how to interview students as a means of formative assessment, and write a set of problems to use with their students as part of a cognitively guided classroom. Participants will return on the third day with student work samples and interviews to share and review with the group.
