Bridging Spanish and English Literacy in Classrooms with Spanish-Speaking English Language Learners
for ELA teachers of Spanish-speaking ELLs in grades 2-5




In this training, participating teachers will gain an understanding of how to use the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) and Spanish Language Arts and Reading (SLAR) standards to help Spanish-speaking students bridge from Spanish literacy to English literacy. Participants will engage in structured conversations and cooperative group discussions about the importance in identifying the appropriate time to transfer Spanish literacy skills to English while accommodating the students' various levels of language proficiency. Finally, particpants will be exposed to strategies and activities that accelerate and ensure student learning, as well as second language acquisition.

Important Session Information:


This one-day training, for ESL and bilingual teachers in grades 2-5, will review similarities and differences between English and Spanish in the areas of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Teachers will learn about strategies and activities that facilitate the transfer from Spanish literacy to English literacy. Activities are in both languages.
