DMI Building a System of Tens Day 5: Highlights of Related Research
Mathematics Teacher Mentor Academy
Share
The ideas that children confront as they try to make sense of place value are very complex. We know more about the development of children's understandings of some of these ideas than we do about others. Perhaps we know least about children's understandings of (1) very large numbers, (2) very small numbers (multidigit decimal fractions), and (3) the effects of multiplication and division on powers of ten, especially in the context of decimal numbers. We are still learning about the ideas that children begin with, and how they come to build stronger conceptions. We move toward a clearer picture of this as teachers and researchers continue to make public their thoughtful and careful observations of children building a system of tens.
