Understanding Depth of Knowledge Day 1: What is Intelligence?

Depth of Knowledge, or DOK, is a way to think about content complexity, not content difficulty. That is the first thing with which teachers must come to understand. Complexity is different from difficulty. For example, if students have not seen the word or content before, it might be difficult for them, but it is not complex. During this session, participants will dive deep into what really is intelligence and how does it play a part student learning and retention. Is there a better way to reach the students in a class than what is already practiced? Teachers ask this question everyday. The great news is that reaching students does not have to be complex and more often than not, lateral thinking tasks are given to students under the guise of being rigorous and deep when in reality, they most likely are not. Teachers will stretch their own thinking in this session as they transform their own approach to thinking tasks and take what is learned back to their classrooms.
