Improving FBA/BIP Practices in Schools: The FBA/BIP Technical Adequacy Tool for Evaluation (TATE) and Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) Model

This presentation will provide participants with a quantitative tool to evaluate whether a completed Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) meets the essential components of an evidence-based FBA/BIP. The Technical Adequacy Tool for Evaluation (TATE) is an 18 item evaluation tool that measures the degree of implementation of core components. The TATE has acceptable inter-rater reliability and can be used by school districts as a professional development needs assessment and as a pre/post measure to evaluate improvement in the quality of FBA/BIPs.

The session will include:

  • a description of the evaluation tool including its development and psychometrics
  • technical adequacy results from scoring more than 200 FBA/BIPs
  • case study scoring examples
  • descriptions of how school districts use the TATE to improve their FBA/BIP practices

Participants attending will be given an opportunity to use the TATE to score an FBA and will receive a copy of the tool with the scoring rubric.

Following the TATE, an overview of the Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) Model of a standardized FBA/BIP process will be shared. PTR was evaluated by a randomized controlled trial and found to be more effective than typical behavior supports. Participants will be given an overview of the four-step model, adaptations to make it feasible in school settings, and a job-embedded professional development framework.
