Informing Literacy Instruction with Formative Assessment




Formative assessments are a powerful teaching tool that teachers can use to assess students' content knowledge. This professional development workshop for educators will focus on using formative assessment in the classroom. The day will focus on using strategies that are laid out in Page Keely's formative assessment book. Teachers will experience an interactive session that will build their capacity to effectively use formative assessment. Components of the agenda will include:

  • Understanding what formative assessment is (and is not) in curriculum.
  • Examining the link between instruction and assessment.
  • Modeling and practicing strategies for eliciting students' prior knowledge and monitoring their progress toward conceptual exchange.
  • Creating learning environments conducive to formative assessment.
  • Building a repertoire of strategies for formative assessment.
  • Linking teachers' learning throughout the workshop to their own instructional context.

Important Session Information:


Informing Literacy Instruction with Formative Assessment-- Participants will learn how to use formative assessment to drive literacy instruction.  By understanding the components of formative assessment teachers will be able to choose the appropriate type(s) of assessment and develop effective progress monitoring.  The result is improved instruction and intervention.  The presentation will include a review of essential literacy components and strategies to address learning gaps.
