Surviving the Puberty Years: Sexuality Awareness for Special Needs

Teaching students with disabilities to understand their sexuality and about the changes that occur during puberty is a difficult task. It is important to address sexuality by teaching facts and safe, appropriate behaviors. This requires an instructional focus and early preparation. This presentation will demonstrate how to break down barriers and build comprehensive instruction for students from elementary age through the 18+ class. Strategies focusing on individual safety, independence, and better integration into communities will be provided. Come learn how to talk to your child or student about the changes occurring in their body and how to teach self-help skills and body awareness to promote independence.
