Community-Based Instruction and 18+ Programs: Legal Issues and Best Practices

Community-Based Instruction (CBI) is an important component in transition planning because it helps prepare students with disabilities to live in integrated communities. CBI typically occurs on a regularly scheduled basis and is included with academic or life-skills instruction tied to the IEP based on the TEKS. 18+ programs, on the other hand, should allow students with disabilities to move with their same aged peers and focus on the student’s transition goals, which are not based on TEKS, but based on goals and objectives derived from age-appropriate transition assessment. This session will review legal requirements for community-based instruction and 18+ programs and will discuss best practices for both programs. Participants will complete a self-evaluation of their programs to recognize strengths and needs to determine next steps.
