Elementary Mathematics Institute Level I Day 1: Tools of Mathematics and Place Value

Day 1 of 7-Day Institute Must register for all seven days! Teachers will receive forty-two hours of sustained and intensive professional development in mathematics. Concept development utilizing manipulatives will be stressed through the meaningful teaching and learning of mathematics. All work is based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Improving student performance on STAAR due to improved instruction is a focus. The areas covered include: Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Algebra, Fractions, Geometry, Measurement, and Probability & Statistics. All sessions contain the tools of mathematics: manipulatives, journal writing, problem solving, graphing, number sense, mental math, estimation, verbal problems, technology, literature, and assessment. The sophisticated numeration system we use today is the end product of a long continuous process. Learn how to teach place value through concept development.
