Empowering Upper Elementary Teachers to Teach Phonics

Learn how to empower upper elementary teachers to guide students in developing and sustaining foundational language skills. In this engaging, hands-on presentation, participants will learn practical strategies for explicit and systematic reading instruction that can be immediately used in the classroom. The strategies taught make sense of the English language— explaining why we read, spell, and pronounce words the way we do—so that when students encounter new and unfamiliar words, they are equipped with the skills to recognize and use these words independently.

This session addresses:

  • Best practices for multi-sensory direct instruction for upper elementary students
  • How to help students develop advanced decoding knowledge and support classrooms with students who vary widely in reading skills
  • How to incorporate an instructional method that emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between decoding and encoding
