Supporting Students' Productive Struggle in Middle School Mathematics Day 1: The What and How
Grades 3 - HS
Share
Middle School is a difficult time for students in mathematics. This is a time where students build upon what started their basic understanding of what math is and how it works and wrestles with combining these fundamentals with new topics. Along the course of this bridging of math, students need to use their naturally social skills to become more engaged and responsible for their learning. This session takes a deep dive into the productive struggle that students have when discovering the math behind given tasks and the thinking involved in learning something new. During the session, participants will receive a copy of
Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices
so that meaningful discussions and reflections may occur. The desire is always for our students to want to learn the math and not always just learn it, but connect it to everyday and know why that needed to occur in the first place. By the end of this workshop, teachers will be blown away with the simple tasks in which they can ask their students to explore, but at the same time will deeply establish meaningful mathematics along the way.
