Section 504: Compliance Requirements and the Connection to Child Find/Special Education Referral
Getting Things Done During the Pandemic Environment

If you are new to §504 or want to understand a public school’s duties under this law, this session is for you. A veteran school lawyer will explain how §504 and special education fit together, and the importance of process-based compliance to satisfy the Office for Civil Rights §504 legal requirements. This session will walk through the school’s duty to provide a 504-compliant Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Child find, evaluation and eligibility; creation and documentation of the 504 Plan; and the school's duties in regard to re-evaluation of these students will be covered. The law’s nondiscrimination protections including manifestation determination and equal participation in extracurricular and nonacademic services will also be discussed.
