Making Sense of Sensory Processing




This Series will focus on concepts and strategies aimed at providing supports and/or services for individuals with sensory differences in schools.

Presenters will share evidence-based strategies so that caretakers, school staff, evaluators and related services providers can help students to meet their sensory needs.

Our Presenter:

Dr. Watson has enjoyed a 40-year career as an occupational therapist. She has a bachelors and PhD in Occupational Therapy and a masters in Rehabilitation Medicine. Most of her career as a practitioner has been in pediatrics, specifically in school-based practice. Dr. Watson has taught graduate occupational therapy students as a visiting and adjunct professor in Virginia, Florida, Maryland, and Texas. The last eight years of her career included management of occupational and physical therapists and she also worked as a special education coordinator. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences nationally, at the state level and the local level. Dr. Watson is now enjoying retirement and continues to serve the profession as an accreditation reviewer for occupational therapy education.

 

Our Presentation:

Sensory processing differences is an often-used term that may be applied loosely to explain difficulties some children have with participating in school activities. This presentation for teachers, OTs, LSSPs, and diagnosticians. The presenter will review specifically the sensory differences associated with autism and ADHD.. The presentation also includes a review of intervention strategies that can be used in the classroom to address the behaviors associated with sensory differences and how the efficacy of those strategies can be measured.
