Leading Change: One District's Path to Reducing Significant Disproportionality & Improving Student Outcomes




A variety of professional development activities and trainings focusing on how to promote awareness, understanding, and/or best practices on addressing the needs of diverse students, who are often identified as having academic and/or behavior problems in the school setting.

Sessions and activities may be lead by national and local speakers, as well as ESC6 specialists and representatives from school districts.

Identification, discipline practices, implicit biases and inclusive evidence-based processes will be considered.  Participants may be asked to share their own perspectives.

Session Description:

Change is hard, but change can be a good thing. Change can also improve academic and behavior outcomes for students. In this session, dive deeper into leading district-wide change to reduce significant disproportionality. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of significant disproportionality regulations/requirements. Attendees will also explore the path Bellville ISD took to reduce RDA indicators (district cut points) and positively impact students.

Presenter:

Dr. Megan Pape currently serves as the Director of Inclusive Learning and Innovation in Bellville Independent School District. Originally from Northern California, she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Pape holds a Master of Education degree from Sam Houston State University and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from the University of Houston in Professional Leadership-Special Populations. Dr. Pape’s doctoral research and dissertation focused on the role of professional development for teachers to facilitate social-emotional learning in early childhood classrooms, and the impact acquiring SEL skills have on children later in life.

Dr. Pape has served in Texas public schools for over a decade at all levels from the classroom to district-wide leadership; she has held roles of: Teacher, Educational Diagnostician, Assistant Director, and now Director. She has also served as a presenter at state leadership conferences. Dr. Pape has a history of successful leadership in public education improving inclusivity, academic, and behavior outcomes for students, with emphasis on special populations and students from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Pape’s professional passions include: strategic leadership and systems change, capacity building through professional development, meeting the needs of diverse learners, and supporting the whole child.
