Section 504 Compliance Requirements and the Connection to Child Find/Special Education
504 Basics/Refresher Academy (2 Day On-Site Event)




This session is designed for those new to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or anyone seeking a deeper understanding of a public school’s responsibilities under this law. Led by veteran school lawyers, the session will provide a comprehensive overview of Section 504, focusing on the critical importance of process-based compliance to meet the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) requirements and will equip educators and administrators with the knowledge needed to ensure compliance with Section 504

 

Key topics will include the relationship between Section 504 and special education, the school’s duty to provide a 504-compliant Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), and the necessary steps for compliance. The session will cover essential elements such as child find, evaluation and eligibility, the creation and documentation of the 504 Plan, and the school’s responsibilities regarding the re-evaluation of students. Additionally, the session will explore the law’s nondiscrimination protections, including requirements for manifestation determination and ensuring equal participation in extracurricular and nonacademic services for students covered under Section 504.

 


Important Session Information:


This two-day event will cover basics and provide a deeper dive into  understanding a public school’s duties under §504 law. A veteran school lawyer will discuss §504 and the importance of process-based compliance to satisfy the Office for Civil Rights §504 legal requirements as well as the relationship between §504 and special education. This session will walk through the school’s duty to provide a 504-compliant Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Child find, evaluation and eligibility; creation and documentation of the 504 Plan; and the school's duties in regard to re-evaluation of these students will be covered. The law’s nondiscrimination protections including manifestation determination and equal participation in extracurricular and nonacademic services will also be discussed.

Working lunch will be included with both days of the event and attendees will receive a resource binder and continued access to support throughout the school year via monthly webinars with Richards, Lindsay, and Martin--included with registration cost!
