Supporting Students With Significant Cognitive Disabilities
Communication All Day Every Day: Changing Lives Forever

In an effort to educate students with low incidence disabilities, teachers face challenges in meeting academic, behavioral and social needs.

These sessions will provide resources, strategies and training for those who serve students with complex access needs.  Join this network of teachers, paraprofessionals, specialists, administrators and parents for support and collaboration specifically for serving students with significant cognitive disabilities.

Important Session Information:

When students are not able to communicate effectively, there are broad implications for all aspects of life.  A lack of communication can lead to limited academic success.  A lack of communication can lead to limited social relationships.  A lack of communication can lead to the presence of challenging behaviors.  It only makes sense that when a student is not able to communicate that they are tired or need a drink, they might act out in ways to communicate that message through certain behaviors.

When children have opportunities to develop an effective means of communication throughout their day, the impact on academic, social and behavioral outcomes may be significantly positive.

What we sometimes see as a failure to behave properly is actually a failure to communicate effectively.  All behavior is communication!  Every student should be empowered to have a voice to have better behavior and a better life.  Collaboration between teachers, parents and speech and language pathologist is where it all begins.

Participants will leave with a variety of communication tools including, but not limited to: choice boards, feelings charts, "I need help” cards, "I need a break” cards and more!
