Supporting Students With Significant Cognitive Disabilities
Visually Speaking: Understanding the Brain Connection with Visual Supports

In an effort to educate students with low incidence disabilities, teachers face challenges in meeting academic, behavioral and social needs.

These sessions will provide resources, strategies and training for those who serve students with complex access needs.  Join this network of teachers, paraprofessionals, specialists, administrators and parents for support and collaboration specifically for serving students with significant cognitive disabilities.

Important Session Information:

Under stress, we all struggle to show our best selves.  Stress takes a toll on our reasoning and good nature.  One might say that we act and react in more extreme ways when times are stressful.

Significant findings from research on the brain indicate that individuals with autism spectrum disorders and/or low incidence disabilities live in stressful times more than most.  Research also indicates that visual processing is a strength.  By capitalizing on this strength and harnessing the power of structure, educators and parents can help to decrease this stress.

This session will build an understanding of the neurological differences of autism spectrum disorders so that educators and families can build a world with meaning. The thoughtful and deliberate organization of the classroom serves as the foundation for added visual supports.  Learn how to create individual schedules, checklists, narratives and other visual tools that decrease neurological stress and allow our students to show us their best selves.

This session will focus on the fidelity of the implementation of preventive strategies that promote self-regulation.  In the quest to lessen stress through structure, there are inevitable revisions as the process unfolds.  The ongoing journey involves celebrating successes and refining areas that continue to present “rough spots”.  Through collaboration and data analysis, we can achieve MORE SUCCESS!
