Health Office Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Orientation

An unlicensed school staff member is often referred to as a Health Aide, Clinic Aide, Instructional Aide or Special Education Aide who carries out limited health-related tasks. This person may have previous experience in health care, be certified by the state as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), have received formal first aids training through the Red Cross or similar program, or may have gone through a campus or district orientation and training related to school health services such as medication administration, or specific health condition training such as diabetes care training. In schools without designated school health staff, the non-licensed staff often fill this role.

This program will offer a basic overview of identifying your role, what the Registered Nurse can delegate to you, vital signs assessment review, documentation, medication administration, and basic first aid.

Important Session Information:

This orientation for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel is designed to serve as a support to your district orientation. This program will offer a basic overview of identifying your role, what the Registered Nurse can delegate to you, vital signs assessment review, documentation, medication administration, and basic first aid.

Engaging in face-to-face learning while the virus causing COVID-19 remains in circulation requires thoughtful considerations and careful and detailed planning. School nurses and their health services team are critical health care personnel (HCP) in the community working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in schools. While schools are not identified as “health care settings,” school nurses and UAP work in schools to provide health care services. During the performance of those services, there is risk of infection due to contact with students and/or staff members. Ongoing education is critical in preparing UAPs to perform their assigned tasks in an efficient and safe manner.
