Access & Excellence in K-5 Mathematics Instruction
Scaffolds for Active Fluency and Problem Solving

The implementation of High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) brings a necessary shift toward conceptual understanding and rigorous application in Texas mathematics. However, this rigor can present significant barriers for students with access needs, learning gaps, or disabilities if instructional scaffolds are not systematically in place.

This session is designed to provide a comprehensive support system to ensure Tier 1 instruction remains accessible to every student without lowering academic expectations. By balancing conceptual and procedural rigorous instruction using cohesive strategies, models and terminology, we create a consistent culture of high achievement.

Important Session Information:

High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) relies heavily on the Read-Draw-Write (RDW) process. Students of all abilities often stall at the "Draw" phase due to a lack of concrete understanding, or they struggle with the "Write" phase due to gaps in computational fluency. Educators need low-prep, high-impact scaffolds that bridge the gap between Concrete manipulatives and Abstract application.

This session will support the implementation of a HQIM by focusing on Active Fluency, Scaffolding the RDW Process, Visual Supports for Rigor and Differentiation for Access.

Presented by Mrs. Ayo Jones using examples for TEA's Open Education Resource (OER), Bluebonnet Learning
