Executive Function Series
Executive Functioning 101

Executive functioning is one of the most talked-about topics in education right now, and one of the most misunderstood. Nicole L. Stewart, MSEd, BCBA, LBA-NY/NJ will lead a workshop series designed to give teachers and school professionals a real, working understanding of what executive functioning is, how it develops, and what to do when students struggle. The series opens with three foundational sessions for all school professionals, then splits into elementary (K-6) and secondary (6-12) cohorts for targeted, stage-appropriate strategies. Join one session or join them all. Either way, you’ll leave with tools you can actually use.

Important Session Information:

Think you already know what executive functioning means? This session will confirm what you know, fill in what you don’t, and reframe how you see your students. Executive functioning is the brain’s CEO: it drives everything from starting a task to keeping your mouth shut when you shouldn’t speak. We’ll break down each subdomain, explore how deficits show up in real classroom moments, and examine how the different executive functions influence each other. Expect games, participation, and more than a few aha moments.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define executive functioning and the subdomains that make up the term “executive functioning”
  • Identify uses of each subdomain and symptoms that show up when that subdomain has deficits
  • Pinpoint the intersection between skills across domains and how the different executive functions interact with each other.

T-TESS/T-PESS:
Dimension 1.3: Knowledge of Students, Dimension 2.1: Achieving Expectations, Dimension 3.2: Managing Student Behavior
