Building Background Knowledge & Vocabulary
Building Knowledge, Growing Vocabulary, Strengthening Reading in Secondary RLA




Designed specifically for secondary RLA teachers, this professional learning session focuses on practical classroom applications aligned to RBIS 3: Building Background Knowledge and Vocabulary. Participants will explore instructional routines and strategies that support students’ ability to access complex texts, develop academic language, and build the knowledge needed for deeper comprehension. Through examples such as Article of the Week, cross-curricular connections, and word study strategies, teachers will consider how to intentionally incorporate knowledge-building and vocabulary development into their existing RLA instruction. Participants will leave with actionable routines, planning tools, and classroom-ready ideas to strengthen students’ reading, discussion, and writing across the secondary RLA classroom.
