Building Capacity for Parent & Family Engagement ($)
PFE Building Capacity

Participants will develop a clear understanding of the purpose and requirements of Parent & Family Engagement (PFE) under Title I, Part A, including required “Shalls” and discretionary “Mays.” They will explore LEA and campus responsibilities for building the capacity of parents and staff and learn how to create family engagement that is meaningful, accessible, and focused on two-way communication.

The training will also highlight how PFE connects across programs, including Title III and multilingual learners, Migrant Education, and Special Education Indicator 8. Participants will explore how districts can create a more coordinated approach to family engagement rather than addressing each program separately.

A local district will spotlight its Early Childhood “Kitty Club” program, sharing how it engages families and helps children and parents prepare for the transition into Pre-K and Kindergarten. This practical example will demonstrate how early family engagement can build relationships, support school readiness, and create successful transitions into school.

Participants will also explore common barriers to family engagement, strategies for removing those barriers, and the documentation and evidence needed to demonstrate implementation and compliance. Through a hands-on campus capacity audit, participants will identify a strength, an area for growth, and a next step.

Participants will leave with practical ideas and one actionable commitment they can immediately implement to strengthen partnerships with families and create more meaningful opportunities for every family to engage in their child’s education.

Important Session Information:

Join us for an engaging and practical professional learning experience focused on strengthening Parent & Family Engagement under Title I, Part A. This training will help you move beyond simply hosting parent events and toward creating meaningful, two-way partnerships that support student learning and achievement.

During the session, you’ll explore the required “Shalls” and discretionary “Mays” of Parent & Family Engagement and gain a clearer understanding of the responsibilities of both the LEA and campus in building the capacity of families and staff. You’ll have an opportunity to reflect on your current family engagement practices and consider whether they are accessible, meaningful, and truly provide families with opportunities to be heard and involved.

Participants will explore how Title III can support meaningful engagement with multilingual learners and their families, how Migrant Education programs can intentionally engage families in supporting student success and continuity of services, and how Special Education Indicator 8 focuses on parent involvement and the importance of parents having meaningful opportunities to participate in the education and decision-making processes for their children with disabilities. Together, these connections will help participants consider how districts can create a more cohesive PFE approach rather than treating family engagement as separate requirements within individual programs.

As part of the training, one of our local districts will spotlight its Early Childhood “Kitty Club” program, sharing how the initiative engages parents and families while helping young children and their families prepare for the transition into Pre-K and Kindergarten. Participants will hear how the district has created opportunities for families to become connected to the school community before their children officially begin school, build relationships with staff, learn about expectations and available resources, and support their child’s early transition into the educational setting. This local example will provide a practical look at how intentional family engagement can support both school readiness and successful transitions.

You’ll also learn what documentation and evidence can demonstrate effective implementation and compliance, identify barriers that may prevent families from participating, and explore practical strategies for removing those barriers. Through a hands-on campus capacity audit, you’ll identify a current strength, an area for growth, and a next step for your campus or district.

Leave the training with practical ideas, a clearer understanding of Parent & Family Engagement requirements across programs, and one actionable commitment you can put into practice immediately to strengthen partnerships with families and create more inclusive opportunities for every family to engage in their child’s education.
